Chynna Oaks- running for President Elect of NCAEA

Hello! My name is Chynna Oaks and I'm running for President Elect.

Any true biography of Chynna would begin with this: My fascination with art began many, many moons ago over a television show called Pappyland. It's true. Pappy Drewitt, and the many art educators that followed, created within me what could only be described as an art obsession. Years later, my continued obsession got me through a Bachelor's in Art (2012), however it was a developing passion for sharing art with others that led me to a Masters in Education (2015).

Since my teaching journey began in 2017 I've found myself teaching elementary, middle, and now high school. In 2021, at the height of my "middle school era," I was honored to receive the award for NCAEA's Middle Level Educator of the Year. In addition to spending time in the classroom, I've dedicated many hours to NCAEA and have served on the board since 2019-- first as Region 6 Coordinator and, most recently, By Design Editor. Last year, By Design even brought home a newsletter award from NAEA.

I've come to know many of you at the conference, in presentations, workshops, or over the buffet. You've received countless emails from me (including this one)... While I still have many things to learn about being an editor, a board member, or even a leader in education, I can confidently say that I have, and will continue to, make every possible effort to grow. I will support you in your growth. I will continue to publish documents and plan professional development events, and even take on the daunting task of planning our conference because I believe in what you do. As President Elect, my job will be to provide you with inspiration, educational opportunities, and support so that you can do what you do best: teach kids to love art.
